Benjamin Scher

Dr Benjamin Scher is a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Global Health Program at Princeton University. He uses primarily qualitatively driven ethnographic methods to generate evidence that can support policymakers in their efforts to establish more effective and humane interventions that address both the overdose crisis and the complex health, environmental and socio-economic needs of communities impacted by drug-related overdose and harm.  Dr Scher has disseminated his research at policy venues including the UK House of Commons and the United Nations Commision on Narcotic Drugs and has delivered a TedX talk titled 'The Logical Next Step in Drug Policy'. He teaches on the topics of global health drug policy, the North American opioid crisis and qualitative/participatory research methods.

Dr Scher received his DPhil in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford, where he was funded through a Society for the Study of Addiction Doctoral Studentship and was supervised by Professor Dave Humphreys (University of Oxford), Dr Gillian Shorter (Queen's University Belfast) and Dr Benjamin Chrisinger (Tufts University).
